How well do you manage organisational change

HOW GOOD ARE YOU AS A CHANGE AGENT?
If you are a manager or leader in business, you may often find yourself having to get your team through the stress of dealing with organisational or departmental changes. Your ability to communicate and manage this change process can make or break the motivation levels of the people in your team. Managers often need to be “Change Agents” because organisational change is constant and unavoidable. To be an effective change agent, you need to answer ‘yes’ to as many questions as possible in Section 1 and ‘no’ to as many questions as possible in Section 2. Think of a recent and major change which you introduced. Did you…

Section 1
• Clearly stipulate the proposed change you wanted to make?
• Identify in advance the factors that were likely to support the change?
• Identify in advance the factors that were not likely to support the change?
• Spell out ‘what’s in it for them’ to those affected by the change?
• Advertise your change well in advance?
• Ensure that your decisions were supported by all?
• Systematically ‘chip away’ at any resistance you encountered?
• Offer any training or other assistance to those affected by the change?
• Gradually implement the change?
• Monitor the situation carefully and take any corrective action?

Section 2
• Insist on the change taking place immediately?
• Insist on the change taking place speedily?
• Point out to those affected that their service might no longer be required once the change happens?
• Concentrate on one or two significant parties when introducing the change and ignore the rest?
• Indicate that the proposed change was a complete break from the ‘bad’ past?
